Taking care of your dentures
If you’ve recently got dentures for the first time, you’ll be keen to take care of them properly. Just as we need to care for our natural teeth and gums, making sure that your dentures are cleaned daily really matters. Making sure that you follow appropriate cleaning routines will extend the life of your dentures and help to avoid the need for early replacement. It’s also an important tool to help you prevent inflamed gums, infections, and even the loss of further teeth.
With that in mind, it’s also important to stress that your gums and remaining natural teeth shouldn’t be forgotten as you clean your dentures! Maintaining your good dental hygiene will help to keep your teeth and gums in great shape, which will help your dentures to fit properly and feel comfortable.

How do I care for my new dentures?Proper denture care matters! It’s important to brush, rinse and soak your dentures daily.
-
How long will it take to adjust to new dentures?Everyone is different, and the way a person’s mouth responds to dentures can vary. As a rule, most people report finding they get used to their new dentures within roughly 30 days.
-
What if I am gagging on my new dentures? As your mouth gets used to your dentures, they move slightly. If they touch the back of your throat when doing so, this can cause you to gag. If you’ve had a tooth extraction and still have swelling, this can also push your dentures into the wrong position, causing the issue. Over time this should stop, but if it doesn’t, it may be that you are particularly sensitive in this area, and your dentures may require adjustment.
-
Should new dentures be loose?Your dentures may feel loose to start with. This is because the muscles that will hold them in place are still learning what to do! With time, this should stop. If not, your dentures may require adjustment.
-
Do new dentures hurt? There may be some discomfort as your mouth and jaw gets used to the denture. Warm salt water rinses for the first 14 days may help to alleviate this. If soreness persists, please seek advice from your dentist or dental technician.
